The Peninsula Co-op does it again!

Once again, the Peninsula Co-op has awarded the McLoughlin Gardens a significant grant. As with two previous grants, these funds allow us to continue the work of  maintaining the cottage, which was designed by Sarah McLoughlin and built in 1976.

Volunteers have dismantled the deck on the east side of the house and are now replacing it with a new deck, using locally milled red cedar.

We are immensely grateful to the Co-op for their ongoing support of the Gardens. This kind of practical assistance allows us to continue fulfilling our mission, which is to maintain (and restore) the gardens and the original buildings, as a park and as a site for creative exploration and renewal.

Spring 2022

We are pleased to announce that the McLoughlin Gardens has received a generous grant from the BC Arts Council. This funding allows us to cover the costs of both residencies (Don McKay, in residence June 20 - July 7 and Darrel McLeod, July 31 - September 4). Also, for the first time, the McLoughlin Gardens Creative Residency is able to offer four fully-funded short-term residencies.

Summer 2020

The Playwrights Guild of Canada sponsored a public reading with writer-in-residence Marcus Youssef. Forty local residents came out in early September to hear Marcus read from several plays. A community discussion on the value of live performance followed the reading.

Spring 2020

Peninsula Co-op generously donated $1,000 towards the repair of the shed roof. Repairs and cleaning made the space more than usable for the writer-in-residence and for holding workshops.

Summer 2019

Courtenay Rotary very generously funded the McLoughlin Gardens 2019 Writer-in-Residence, Maleea Acker.

During her residency, Maleea met with more than twenty local poets and writers. She prepared and led two afternoon workshops and also gave a public reading at the Courtenay Library. In the last week and a half at the McLoughlin Gardens, Maleea was able to focus on her own work and produced nine new poems! We eagerly await news of their publication in a forthcoming book.

Summer 2018

The new deck was built by two dedicated volunteers, using some beautiful yellow cedar from a local sawmill.

In the summer of 2018, thanks to the generous donation of $1,000 by Peninsula Co-op, we were able to complete the rebuilding of the front deck.
